Balance Cholesterol Naturally

Cholesterol is an important building block for the normal function of every cell in the body and is essential for all metabolic processes. Moreover, cholesterol is particularly important for the production of bile, hormones, vitamin D and nerve tissue. The average adult is able to produce hundreds times more cholesterol than would normally be consumed by eating a pound of butter. The main organs responsible for the production and metabolism of cholesterol are the liver and the small intestine. Normally, they are able to release cholesterol into the bloodstream, where it binds with lipoproteins that transport it to its numerous destinations. The three main lipoproteins are low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density protein (VLDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL). 

The Liver is Primarily Responsible for Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels HDL, which has been deemed the “good cholesterol”, is much smaller than its counterparts LDL and VDL, thus it is able to pass through the tiny capillaries of the blood vessel network effortlessly. LDL and VDL, however are much larger and are meant to pass through the blood in the liver. Because the liver is required to take in the entire blood content, its capillaries, called sinusoids, are larger and more equipped to take LDL and VDL into the its cells, restructure them and excrete them along with bile into the intestine. Once in the intestine, the cholesterol combines with fats and is absorbed into the blood stream.

Gallstones congesting the bile ducts of the liver prevent adequate bile secretions, which in turn inhibits much of the LDL and VDL cholesterol from being excreted with the bile into the intestine. Furthermore, gallstones block and suffocate the sinusoids, preventing the LDL and VDL from entering the Liver’s cells where they can be rebuilt and sent on their way. As previously mentioned, since HDL is small enough to leave the bloodstream through the ordinary capillaries, it is rarely ever found to reach abnormally high levels in the blood. However, LDL and VDL become trapped in the liver and their concentrations rise in the blood. This by no means is a cause of heart disease; rather, it is a consequence of an unbalanced liver, of a congested circulatory system, and of a poor diet and lifestyle.
